Paged initiates new waste management technology

Paged, the largest plywood manufacturer in Poland and one of the leading in Europe, has initiated work on an innovative method of processing and reusing waste. The new technology has been successfully implemented in the production of filmed plywood in cooperation with the Polish company Lerg.

The work on the new technology was made possible by the establishment of the R-Products Project, led by an interdepartmental team of specialists from Paged. The objectives of the Project were to reduce waste disposal by 20% and to invent new applications and recycled products. A major role was played by the Paged LabTech research team, which prepared the assumptions for the technology in such a way that the filler from post-production waste, further strengthened the gluing quality of the waterproof film plywood. Paged’s range includes 11 types of film-faced plywood, such as Mesh, Hexa and Trans, which are specialised materials that meet exacting requirements for flexibility, strength, moisture resistance or slip resistance.

We are constantly looking for solutions to enable us to develop a responsible circular economy at our sites – explains Ewelina Depczyńska, CEO of Paged LabTech, Paged Group’s Research and Development Centre. – During the production of film-faced plywood, we generate several tens of tonnes of waste in the form of cut films every year. Today, we are proud to announce that the waste that was previously disposed of is now returning to our production as an additive for phenolic resins. The introduction of the new approach required investment in waste segregation and cooperation with a partner who developed the processing technology. The extra effort has paid off. Now we not only take better care of the environment, but also reduce waste management costs,” concludes Depczyńska.

– Paged invited Lerg to cooperate in managing the waste generated in an alternative way to disposal. Lerg specialists, with the environmental aspect in mind, developed a method to transform the chemical waste generated at Paged into a raw material that could be used in the production of glue mixtures. The realisation of this solution required a considerable amount of work, including a literature review, laboratory and technical trials, as well as the selection of suitable equipment and the design of the industrial system. The project was successful, reducing the environmental impact and avoiding unnecessary waste disposal. This project contributed to a reduction in the consumption of basic raw materials by using waste film in a suitable form for the production of adhesive compounds,’ comments Grzegorz Czochara, Head of the Research and Development Department at Lerg SA.
