Paged partners with Stora Enso to cut carbon emissions from plywood

07.03.2023, Pisz, PolandA Polish plywood manufacturer Paged, one of the TOP 5 producers in EU, partnered with renewable materials company Stora Enso to meet customers’ need for bio-based and more sustainable plywood and to cut carbon emissions with the use of Stora Enso’s lignin, Lineo® by Stora Enso to replace fossil-based glue in plywood.

For nearly 90 years, the Polish manufacturer Paged has offered a wide range of plywood products to its customers. The resin is the major remaining fossil-based component in plywood, and Lineo® by Stora Enso, being made from lignin, which is the main building block of a tree, helps replace phenol in resins for plywood.

With Lineo®, Paged may replace up to 40% of fossil-based binder with lignin, resulting in a more environmentally friendly end-product. The ultimate goal is to be able to achieve several thousand tons of reduction in carbon emissions.

In the current industrial trials, Paged and Stora Enso assess how the use of bio-based glue will reduce carbon emissions from plywood and correspond with the European Commission target of carbon neutrality for wood industry. Lignin-based binder reduces the carbon footprint of plywood products all the way from production to final end-use applications, without compromising on technical performance.

Sustainability is particularly important in wood industry – said Jarosław Michniuk, Chief Executive Officer in Paged. Currently we are working on several initiatives that will contribute to a more sustainable environment starting from more use of renewable energy in production to products which are fully made from sustainable components. A prime example of this is our partnership with Stora Enso. We strongly believe that with such innovations, we are enhancing our product range and continuing to grow solutions, which positively impact our customers’ goals towards carbon neutrality.

What is lignin?

Lignin is a plant-derived polymer found in the cell walls of almost all dry-land plants. Lineo® by Stora Enso, Stora Enso’s commercial lignin offering, is a renewable, wood-based, non-toxic alternative to fossil-based materials with numerous application possibilities.
